March 2006 Letter from 2 young people at youth club caernarfon

In your presentation we learned a lot about your life and drugs and how it ruined your life. It made us feel depressed when you started talking about not getting to see your kids and wanting drugs before your kids. We liked the way you were telling us to think before taking drugs, and that you weren't telling us that we are not allowed to take them. But now we will never even try it, and i think you have learned a lot to us here and hope you will carry on going around youth clubs and schools to tell people like us about your life. If you would not interest young people you would not be here today.

Thank you very much

Class work Jeff Webbs visit 21/03/2006

I enjoyed the visit you gave to our school on 14/03/2006. Thank you for giving up some of your time to share your experiences with us, I am sure it was hard for you personally. The most enjoyable part of the visit was the role play introduction you performed. To be truthful, I was shocked and scared from that.

By performing that role play, and then stop and become out of character, it just makes you wonder how hard it must of been to change your ways. It was two completely different persons and i was nearly in tears to hear your family was involved in everything you did.

I want to say well done for changing your ways. It must of been hard, but I am sure worth it. I hope things have worked out for the better for you.

You gave me such an effect, I told my parents about the visit and they said it sounded interesting and they asked questions about drugs. They asked me if I will or wont take them. By watching and listening to you and your experiences, I immediately said no. You gave me a clearer picture of the knock on effect.

Thank you again

Feb 2006 Testimonial from Ysgol Brynrefail, Llanrug, Caernarfon, Gwynedd, North Wales (01286 672381)

Dear Jeff,

I wish to thank you very much for your valuable contribution you have made to year 10 Personal and Social Education programme during the last 2 terms. The six sessions have been very successful with all the groups. They not only enjoyed the sessions but the feedback suggests that they have also learned a lot. Not only did they learn facts, but your ability to transmit your personal experience to them definitely has an effect on their attitudes and ability to reason and reflect upon personal behaviour.

Dec 2005 Testimonial from Ysgol Glan y Mor, Pwllheli, Gwynedd, North Wales (01758 701 244)

Dear Jeff,

I am writing this letter to thank you once more for your valuable contribution to the Ysgol Glan y Mor Year 11 Health Fair on the 14th of November 2005. It isn't often that people attend such a long day on a voluntary basis, and we are truly grateful for your help on the day.

The pupils response to your presentation was unanimously positive, with all of them commenting on the honest way in which you approached a difficult subject.

Pupils were then given a questionnaire giving their opinions of the day, and 70 of the 74 completed questionnaires placed your presentation as the most informative and enjoyable one of the 6 presentations.

My hope for the future is to make this sort of health fair a yearly event for Year 11 pupils, and you will be the first i contact for drugs awareness sessions in the future!

My Thanks once again,

Einir Wyn Matulla (PSE Co-ordinator)

Testimonial from Ysgol Tryfan, Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales  (Tel. 01248 352633) for presentations in 2005.

Dear Jeff,
On behalf of Year 9 pupils I should like to thank you for the presentations you gave at the school.  The hour-long presentation to each form group were both informative and thought provoking.  The pupils were able to appreciate the wider implications of substance abuse and their opinions and values were reconsidered.  The final session was exceptionally honest and I know that you left a lasting impression on the pupils and staff who heard your talk.

Your analysis of the pupils'  perceptions was a valuable tool for us in school and having talked with a number of students following your last visit I know that they consider the project time well spent.  Each of them said that it was worthwhile and should be repeated annually.  The youth worker, who is affiliated to the school has also praised the project and values your input.

I look forward to working with you again in the new academic year.  It is important that pupils are given all the pertinent facts befor making their own decisions and I believe that this project has an important role to play.

Yours sincerely,

N.Lloyd Jones (Deputy Headmistress).

Year 9 Pastoral Programme
Drugs Education

Mr.Webb made a valuable contribution to our pastoral provision for year 9 during this period.  The pastoral guidelines for school do encourage teachers to draw on real life cases involving misuse of drugs.  Mr.Webb's account of his experience meets these requirements - giving pupils a real insight to the emotional reality of the world of drug misuse.

Mr.Webb managed to captivate his audience for the whole time allocated.  Hiss account summarised all aspects of his previous life as a drug dealer and the devastating emotional and physical effects on him and his family.  This struck a chord with pupils.  This compelling insight would draw on their emotions - making the pupils more receptive to being informed.

Mr.Webb's contribution far exceeds what we as a school could manage to achieve in the time period. Pupils may at time find it difficult to appreciate subject teachers discussing pastoral/health issues in the classroom and do value outside contributions to their learning.  This in itself can be demanding for the pastoral co-ordinator, having to deal with people who may or may not have the necessary skills to communicate with school children or having to deal with people who may not be dependable or punctual.  Mr.Webb however excelled in his ability to communicate with the pupils.  His commitment, punctuality and attendance made the whole experience enjoyable and rewarding for everyone involved.
